Evaluation Presentation - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? - Script

(1) – Our product uses a variety of different conventions of the indie genre, for example there isn’t much of a storyline within our music video, something which is common within this genre. It also has a lot of different cuts throughout the video, which uses the forms of the genre, and we have also used a lot of long shots.

(2) –Deserted places and darkness are common themes within this genre such as in the Yeasayer music video to 2080, and another example would be the Stars video by Warpaint. These are themes that we have used within our music video quite often.

(3) – Another thing that is commonly used within this genre is illustrating the lyrics, another thing which we have done, such as when the actress is brushing her long brown hair, ad when she puts her hands in her pockets.

(1) – We have used a lot of shots of the main star singing and playing the song, and we have also used a lot of meat shots, these are again things that are common within this genre and within a lot of other music videos. We also know from our audience research that this is something that they would expect to see.

(2) - We have also used the written lyrics on screen, another thing which is often used in this genre, for example in Yuck’s video for “Get Away’ – they hold them up on cardboard whereas we write them on paper and burn them in the fire.

(3) – We have also layered images so that there is two shots together, another thing that has been used quite a lot within this genre.

(1) – We have also used some of Andrew Goodwin’s theory throughout our video, for example there is a clear relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, such as when the actress brushes her long brown hair, or when she puts her hands in her pockets.

(2) - Andrew Goodwin also said that there is a relationship between the music and the visuals which is something we have done, such as when the actress is strumming the guitar along with the guitar in the song.

(3) – The style is related to the genre of the music video and iconography is present, which is another of Andrew Goodwin’s theories, such as the clothing worn in the video, and the image of the main star playing is quite iconic of the genre.

(1) – Music videos within this genre tend to be filmed in open places, such as what we have done near the field, also there are multiple close ups of the main artist.

(2) – There aren’t any intertextual references within our music video as we didn’t think that it was something that fitted within the genre

Q2

-I think that our main product and ancillary texts are effective because I think it is what the audience would expect to see either after watching the video, of after seeing the texts.

-Also effective because it illustrates the title ‘Shadows’ through the use of images and text.

-They are also effective because of the matching dark colours and the costumes, so therefore the audience will expect to see something similar, which they will.

- They also create a brand identity and are easily recognisable once you have seen one or the other.

-Photo shoot creates a bad identity, which is recognisable; it also links in with the video by wearing the same clothes and such.

-The reason we chose a black and white colour scheme was because the video and the music is quite dark and dull which we think the black and white represents and also it gives us a brand identity which is easily recognisable.

Q1

-Our product uses conventions of the genre such as there not being much of a story line and the fact that the storyline is hard to follow.

-It also has lots of different cuts throughout the video, which uses the forms of the genre.

-Used lots of long shots which are also conventions of the genre.

-Deserted places are also commonly used within this genre

-Illustrating the lyrics is also something that is used within this genre.

-Shots of the band playing/singer playing.

- Another thing that I have seen used often within this genre of music videos that we have used ourselves is the use of the actual lyrics on the screen, for example Yuck in Get Away write their lyrics on cardboard and hold them up, whereas we Write them on paper and burn them in the fire.

-Layered images/2 shots together

-We have challenged the conventions by using shots where there a lot of people such as in the city, which isn’t something you usually see within this genre, as usually there is only the person/group and places are deserted or there is nobody else there.

-Another thing which we don’t have in our video as we didn’t feel the need to was the use of random images which don’t appear to go with the video, which are very commonly used in this genre of music videos.

-We also done an image of the band on the digipak, although this has been done often within this genre, it isn’t done very often and more commonly within this genre it is an image of pattern of something else.
